Whitening Warning: Bleaching Blunders Can Have Painful Effects

It’s a painful mistake that hundreds of people make on an annual basis. The day before a family wedding, Anna Phillips was making plans to look her best in the formal photos. She bought standard over-the-counter whitening strips, popped them in her mouth and relaxed on her bed after dinner. Then—accidentally—she fell asleep.

“We see this kind of thing happen all the time,” says Floss Dentist Clark Steffens. “Sometimes the patients arrive in tears because of the severe pain.”

Anna woke up the next morning with throbbing teeth and gums; the gel had remained in place all night. “It was the worst oral pain I’ve ever experienced,” she says. “And I did it to myself!”

Most bleaching gels contain peroxide mixed with other chemicals. When the bleaching agent—even in its mildest concentration—is left in place for hours, the caustic chemicals can leach too deeply into tooth enamel, irritating nerve endings and gums. The longer the gel remains in place, the worse the irritation. “That’s the number one mistake made by people who try to do too much too quickly, or who accidentally leave the trays in too long,” says Dr. Steffens. “Leaving any bleaching agent in your mouth longer than 30 minutes is a major blunder.”

The second problem – less common – is attempting to apply a professional grade of bleach at home. “Only a trained dental hygienist or dentist should be applying the higher concentrations of oral bleach,” says Dr. Steffens. “We have to take real precautions and monitor the process in a clinical setting.” Generally speaking, the dental industry divides bleaching compounds into two categories: one for over-the-counter use, and the second (higher concentration) is only for use in dental practices, to be applied by technicians with the appropriate training. Most dentists regard anything with 20% or higher concentration of peroxide as a professional-grade bleaching agent.

The third blunder is consuming certain dark liquids or foods immediately after bleaching. The chemical compounds in most bleach temporarily open the pores in tooth enamel. So, if a dark food is consumed shortly after the bleach has been applied, it has a greater likelihood of staining teeth. Steffens says patients should completely refrain from dark food for the first twelve hours after bleaching, and limit dark foods as much as possible thereafter. “The major culprits are coffee, red wine, blueberries and chocolate,” says Steffens, “all the good stuff.”

I used a home bleaching kit cause my teeth were yellow. Besides getting white teeth my gum recession is now growing back and the inflamation is gone. What did the bleaching kit do?

i know you can brush your teeth with baking soda etc etc but do you know of any homemade recipes for teeth bleaching that i can use with dental trays? i already have the trays from an at home teeth whitening kit but im just tired of going and buying the gel.
and preferably the recipe wouldnt contain glycerol..because i don’t have it

This is something you should not concoct yourself. You could potentially do great harm to your gum tissue. Spend $ 10 and get a product from the drugstore which has passed the FDA scrutiny and which will not send you to the hospital.

It is safe enough, my friends recently got it done. Her teeth aren’t sensitive or any weaker. Also you have to be careful make sure you get a licensed practitioner. Heard of some woman who got her teeth whitened on a cruise and then after a few days the chemicals ruined he teeth and they become worse than they originally where.

Teeth Bleaching with Carbamide Peroxide can be Dangerous According to a Study of “Brazilian Oral Research” – by “Mega Teeth Whitening ltd.”

As many people struggled to have whiter teeth, more and more innovations have been developed as a response to teeth whitening or teeth bleaching need. Other symptoms of prolonged exposure to hydrogen peroxide can lead to gum irritation such as cold and hot food sensitivity to the mouth.

According to a study conducted by Brazilian Oral Research in 2012, peroxide agent specifically carbamide peroxide which is also used as a bleaching agent, causes sensitivity into the teeth enamel. It has been explained that teeth bleaching agent such as carbamide peroxide can expose the microscopic particles of the tooth which is known as dentin. Research explained that when hot or cold water has reached the dentin, sensitivity will be felt. The sensitivity will be more intensified when the teeth’s temperature warms back to the patient’s body temperature. Permeability occurs as the teeth bleaching agent exposes more dentin. More and more sensitivity will be felt after teeth bleaching time has increased. While there are really no detailed reports on the side effects made from bleaching, the study is just a sort of warning because people have different reactions to chemicals. But as long as professionals in cosmetics dentistry industry has recommended that bleaching can still be applicable and available, there is no need to worry about side effects.
