San Antonio Cosmetic Dentist Offers Free High-Tech Screenings for Deadly Oral Cancer

Oral and pharyngeal cancers are among the most dangerous of cancers – hard to detect in the early, treatable stages, and carrying a high mortality rate.

Every year in the United States, about 37,000 new patients are diagnosed – that’s about the same as the population of Del Rio. And there are about 8,000 fatalities a year – more than the entire population of Alamo Heights. In fact, within five years of diagnosis, almost half of the patients will be dead.

This year, Dr. Edward Camacho, DDS, and his Cosmetic Dentistry of San Antonio practice will help combat the disease by providing free oral cancer screenings in recognition of National Oral Cancer Awareness Month, celebrated in April. The free screenings are scheduled for Friday, April 15, 2011, from 1-4 pm at the Cosmetic Dentistry of San Antonio facility at 16535 Huebner, Suite 102, San Antonio, TX 78248. Screenings will be done using the cutting-edge Velscope™ – a special painless light that can spot oral cancer in its tiny – and more treatable – early stage. This is crucial, because such tiny abnormalities are often invisible to the naked eye, and often can’t be seen by dentists and other oral health professionals using traditional white light.

“You can survive oral cancer” Dr. Camacho says, “but the key is early detection. All of my patients receive a no-charge Velscope exam. We can also test for the HPV virus (this virus is linked to oral cancer) for those in high risk groups.”

Here are some other facts you need to know about oral and pharyngeal cancer, according to the Oral Cancer Foundation:

    Deadly disease – With a five-year survival rate of 55 percent, the death rate for oral cancer is higher than better-known cancers such as cervical cancer, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, laryngeal cancer, testicular cancer, and endocrine system cancers such as thyroid, or skin cancer (malignant melanoma).

    Age gap shrinking – Historically most oral cancer patients are over 40, but it’s being seen more often now in younger people.

    Smoking and alcohol – The long-term consumption of alcohol and tobacco (smoking or smokeless) are two of the major lifestyle factors linked to the development of oral cancer.

    Sexually transmitted virus – The other major factor is the human papilloma virus, especially version 16 (HPV16), which is linked to about 90 percent of cervical cancers. This virus is commonly a sexually transmitted disease. This may explain the increasing number of younger people developing oral or pharyngeal cancers.

    Gender rates changing – In past decades, six times as many men as women have developed oral cancer. But the ratio is now only 2-1, with the large increase in women smoking suspected as the cause.

    Racial gap – Black people are twice as likely as whites to develop oral cancer, and have a much worse death rate. The five-year survival rate for white oral cancer patients is 55 percent, while black patients have only a 33 percent chance of survival.
